Upgrading handhelds
Selecting an upgrade method
There are three different upgrade options that you can use to upgrade Handheld Software. If you
upgrade Handheld Software using the administration computer or upgrade Handheld Software using
the Application Loader, you must install the Handheld Software in a shared software directory on an
administration computer. See
“Configuring Handheld Software on an administration computer” on
page 34 for more information.
If you upgrade Handheld Software using the Desktop Manager, the Handheld Software must be
installed on user computers.

Software using the
Application Loader
• handhelds do not have to be upgraded using the
administration computer
• the Application Loader can be opened by multiple
users to upgrade multiple handhelds at the same
time
• configure required software applications to be
installed on handhelds
• one instance of a Handheld Software version is
installed and centrally stored in a shared software
directory
• users do not have to install the Handheld Software
on their computers
• users can perform a handheld backup and store the
backup on their computer
• cannot make sure that users upgrade their
handhelds after you have notified them to
• cannot force users to remove unwanted
software applications from their
handhelds
• cannot use software configurations to
create uniformity in the applications that
are installed on handhelds
